Profhilo
Also called: skin booster, injectable moisturiser.
Profhilo at Dr Munroe Clinic is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment that hydrates the skin from within and aims to support collagen and elastin. It is often described as an injectable moisturiser: a skin quality treatment rather than a filler, so it does not add volume or change the shape of the face. It may suit skin that has lost its bounce, looks dull or crepey, or is beginning to soften on the lower face and neck, and is usually given as two treatments, four weeks apart.

what it treats.
Profhilo, made by IBSA, contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid that is stabilised by heat rather than chemical cross-linking. Because it is not cross-linked, it does not hold a shape; instead, it spreads through the tissue beneath the skin and works on hydration, elasticity and firmness. It is used on the face, neck and décolletage, and a separate formulation is used on the body.

what it doesn't treat.
As a skin quality treatment, Profhilo will not fill lines, lift heavier jowls or replace lost volume in the cheeks. Expression lines respond to anti-wrinkle injections, volume loss to filler, and significant laxity is often a surgical question.
the assessment.
Profhilo is placed at five points on each side of the face, chosen because the product spreads from them across the lower face while avoiding the larger blood vessels. The assessment focuses on whether skin quality is the main concern, or whether volume loss or laxity is contributing to how the skin looks.
what happens on the day.
Following consultation, the risks and side effects are explained, consent is taken and photographs are taken for the clinical record. Numbing cream is available, although the injections are brief: ten points on the face, with a few more for the neck.
recovery.
Small raised bumps at the injection points are normal and usually settle within a few hours. Some people bruise and others do not, and this cannot be predicted in advance.
Avoid make-up on the area for the rest of the day, and strenuous exercise, saunas and heat for 24 hours. There is minimal downtime and most people return straight to their day.
results.
Many people notice an initial glow within a few days of treatment, before the bioremodelling effect begins. The product then works beneath the surface, and most people notice a change in texture and hydration from three to four weeks, with the result settling around eight weeks after the second treatment. It typically lasts around six months, varying with skin type, sun exposure and smoking, and maintenance is usually one or two treatments every six months.
who it isn't for.
Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or where there is active skin infection at the site. It is also not the right treatment where the main concern is volume rather than skin quality.

common questions.
Is Profhilo a filler?
No. Like most fillers it contains hyaluronic acid, but because it is not cross-linked, it spreads through the skin rather than holding a shape.
Profhilo or polynucleotides?
Profhilo focuses on hydration and firmness, while polynucleotides support repair and may suit thin, damaged or scarred skin and the under-eye area. They are often combined, and the skin regeneration page compares them side by side.
