Collagen biostimulation
Collagen biostimulation at Dr Munroe Clinic uses Juläine and Sculptra, injectable treatments made of poly-L-lactic acid. As the body gradually breaks the material down, it encourages the skin to produce new collagen of its own, so change develops over months rather than on the day, and aims to improve firmness, support and facial structure where they have thinned.

who it's for.
Collagen biostimulation may suit volume and support lost across an area rather than in one place, such as hollowing at the temples, a face that has become gaunt, early softening along the jawline, or changes following significant weight loss. It may suit those who would prefer a gradual change to a sudden one.
It is not the right choice for a single defined hollow, where hyaluronic acid filler gives a more controllable and adjustable result, or for the lips. It is also not reversible, as there is no agent that dissolves it, which is why treatment is given in stages and reviewed in between.
how they combine.
Collagen biostimulation rebuilds support gradually. Where a defined hollow remains once it has settled, a small amount of hyaluronic acid filler can follow, and skin regeneration treatments can work on the surface alongside a course.
Results develop gradually, so there is little to see in the first weeks; the face can look fuller for a few days because of swelling, before settling and the gradual change begins. Small firm bumps under the skin can occasionally form, and this is discussed at consultation.
what each one does.
| Juläine | Sculptra | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Poly-L-lactic acid, made by Nordberg Medical in Sweden | Poly-L-lactic acid, the original collagen biostimulator |
| The particles | Small, uniform, spherical microspheres, designed to spread evenly and reduce clumping | Less uniform particles, with a long track record |
| Aftercare | No massage routine | Regular massage for several days after treatment |
| Course | Usually 2 to 3 treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart | Usually 3 treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart |
| When you see it | Builds over 3 to 6 months | Builds over 2 to 3 months after the course |
| The evidence | Newer, with shorter published follow-up | More than 20 years of use and a longer published record |
which one.
Both work in the same way, and both need a course and patience. Juläine's more uniform particles and simpler aftercare make it a straightforward choice for many people, while Sculptra has the longer track record. Dr Munroe recommends one or the other based on the area, the tissue and how you would like to approach the course.
